Hillman Minx 1957

A '57 Hillman Minx Series 1 represents the jewel in the garage. A family piece bought by Hilde's father in May 1957, after returning from whale hunting in the south arctic oceans. At the time, currency restrictions in Norway after the war still made purchase of a private car a public issue. Part of the wage from whaling could, however, be received in foreign currency and the Hillman dealer knew his way around the rules. The Hillman Minx was chosen by the whaler and parachuter above fierce competors like Opel Olympia, Ford Anglia and VW Beetle! Bought  at the Hillman dealer Shell Auto in Sandefjord, Norway. Original licence plates Z-16147, still going strong.

Current (June 1999) odometer reading 224,000 km, original engine. Major body work carried out in spare time from 1983 to 1986. All service records from 1957 in place. The picture below was taken in 1998.

In July 2000, we took the Hillman to a classic car race in Stavern
